Class Rules

Created largely by my students the first two days of class:

Class Rules for English 100A, Fall 2016
  • Be respectful:
    • Don’t talk over each other – you will all get a chance to speak
    • Listen to each other’s thoughts and ideas. Respect opinions.
    • Respect each other’s property
  • Be prepared:
    • Come to class on time – being late can disrupt others
    • Be ready to participate
    • Ask questions! No question is too big or too small
    • Be open-minded! There will be a lot of opinions in this class, and while you don’t have to agree with all of them, you might learn something new.
    • Be organized – bring your materials
  • General guidelines:
    • No cheating. If you use someone else’s words (which you will!), give credit where credit is due.
    • NO CELL PHONES, unless we are using them for a class project.
    • Food and beverages are fine in class, as long as you clean up after yourself.
    • And my addendum: yes, you can swear in class to make a point. This isn’t high school. However, swearing just to swear is not okay, and I would really recommend you refrain from swearing in your essays, because Turnitin doesn’t like it.
